Candle Care is Mindfulness
When I think about candles, I think about the feeling that I get from walking into a room that smells delicious, warm and welcoming. For me, outside of the smell, selecting a candle scent allows me to be creative and sets the "vibe" that I'm feeling for that day, period or mood. Selecting a candle that makes me feel good and the art of picking a place for it while being intentional when lighting the candle is a serotonin boost that has made a tremendous impact on my mental health.
For myself and many others, candles have several positive effects on your overall well being and mental health.
Relaxation and Stress Reduction: The soft and warm glow of candlelight can create a calming and soothing ambiance. Lighting candles can help reduce stress and anxiety, promoting relaxation and a sense of peace.
Mood Enhancement: Certain scents, like lavender, chamomile, or citrus, have aromatherapeutic properties that can positively impact mood. Aromatherapy candles can lift spirits, reduce feelings of sadness, and promote a more positive outlook.
Improved Sleep: Scented candles, particularly those with calming fragrances, can help improve sleep quality. The soothing aroma can relax the mind and body, making it easier to fall asleep and enjoy a restful night. (For fire safety, we NEVER recommend keeping a candle lit while you're asleep)
Mindfulness and Meditation: Lighting candles during meditation or mindfulness practices can help create a focal point for concentration. The soft flickering light can aid in deepening the meditative experience and maintaining focus.
Ritual and Self-Care: Incorporating candles into self-care routines can make the experience more special and meaningful. Taking time to light a candle and engage in self-care activities can promote a sense of self-love and nurturing.
Stimulating the Senses: Candles that offer both visual and aromatic stimuli can engage the senses, providing a multi-sensory experience that can be deeply relaxing and pleasurable.
Creating Sacred Space: Candles have been used for centuries in rituals and ceremonies to create a sacred and spiritual atmosphere. Lighting candles can trigger a sense of comfort, protection, and connection to something greater.
Reducing Overstimulation: In our modern world filled with screens and artificial lighting, the soft glow of candles can provide a gentle and less overstimulating alternative, helping to ease tension and sensory overload.
Promoting Mindfulness and Presence: Lighting a candle and watching its flame can encourage a sense of mindfulness and being present in the moment. Observing the dance of the flame can help center thoughts and bring focus to the now.
Symbolic Meaning: For some, candles can carry symbolic meaning, representing hope, enlightenment, or transformation. The act of lighting a candle with intention can bring a sense of purpose and significance to one's mental health practices.
While candles can be beneficial for mental health, it's essential to use them safely and mindfully (See FAQ, candle care card and label under the candle for proper candle care). Always keep an eye on the lit candles and place them away from flammable materials or drafts. Remember, candles can complement a holistic approach to mental health and can be a great addition to your self care routine, but they are not a substitutes for professional treatment when needed.
